Munich ABC. Thanks to John for a wonderful stay!
Our trip to Munich was arranged in response to Lufthansa requesting we use the credit we had from fights booked in 2020 to go to Oberammergau for the Passion Play. Lufthansa were very good to postpone the flights but insisted we book something before the end of January to be taken by the end of 2022. We then started looking to see what we could see and where we could go.
We came across John;s Bavarian Tours on an internet search. Not knowing the area we wanted someone to take us around and act as interpreter as we have virtually non-existent German language skills. The extensive choice of numerous tours offered by John enabled us to arrange a programme that suited our needs and expectations. Our main interest for this trip was Church Architecture.
John met us at the airport on our early arrival and took us on a tour of Munich to orientate us and give us some idea of the city. We had a wonderful lunch at BMW Welt and then John dropped us at our hotel, the bijou Hotel Opera, which he had recommended. The following day we spent time on our own exploring Munich on foot in glorious spring sunshine and cloudless blue skies, taking in many churches and admiring the architecture. Next morning John collected us after an early breakfast for an excursion to Hohenschwangau castle. On the journey he gave us vast insight into the history and character of Ludwig II and his family. After a traditional lunch in Ettal we were driven by John his comfortable VW mini-bus to Linderhof Palace. As it was very early in the season there was still a considerable amount of snow on the ground, which added to the magic of the place despite the fountains and cascades being under wraps for frost protection. Our plans for the next day included a couple more churches (Another Baroque Church!) that John had recommended and a tour of the Residenz. In the evening we had arranged our own tickets in advance to the Bayeriche Staadoper to see Peter Grimes by Britten. Another great experience. All the way to Germany for a British Opera! Another early start the next day being collected by John after breakfast for a tour of churches starting at Steingaden where John had arranged a personal tour with a member of the church community. We had another excellent lunch on the way to Wessobrunn Abbey where we had another personal tour with one of the church staff who stepped in at the last minute as the Pastor was unavailable. We managed to fit in two more churches in Deißen before returning to the Hotel and bade farewell to John who had looked after us so well during the week.
Without his experience and knowledge of the area our stay would have been very different. We saw places not usually available to the general tourist thanks to John having the “key” to “hidden doors”.
John’s Bavarian Tours is not a cheap option but worth every Euro and Cent for providing a detailed, educational but relaxing personal service confident in the knowledge that you will be looked after by an experienced informative guide who really knows Munich having lived there fo many years.
